About the museum
The Schlosskirche on the Saarbrücken Schlossberg is first mentioned in 1476 and has served as a Protestant church since 1575. It was badly damaged in the Second World War; the original cross-rib vault was afterward replaced by a flat ceiling. It is also the burial place of several counts and princes of the House of Nassau-Saarbrücken.
Since the new display was installed in 2004, the Stiftung Saarländischer Kulturbesitz has used the building as a museum for sacred art and cultural treasures. A glass extension on the south side opens up the gallery and connects the church with the neighboring buildings of the Saarlandmuseum.
The collection spans works from the 13th to the 19th century and shows the role that liturgy and piety played in everyday life. Particular focuses are medieval sculptures, above all Lorraine Madonnas of the 14th century, and Baroque funerary art: in the nave stand five surviving fragments of the apostle cycle by Jacques Pierrard de Coraille, along with his monumental tombs of 1699/1700 and the late Baroque tomb of Prince Wilhelm Heinrich. Colored church windows by Georg Meistermann shape the space.
