About the museum

It began in 1986 with an Easter exhibition organized by residents of Sonnenbühl. From this initiative and years of collecting by volunteers, the museum grew; it opened in 1993 in the old schoolhouse in Erpfingen. It is regarded as Germany's first and, for a long time, its only Easter egg museum.

The collection is devoted to a single theme: the Easter egg, its significance in Christian customs, and the seemingly endless ways it can be decorated. The display cases on the second floor hold more than a thousand eggs and egg objects, from tiny finch eggs to hen's eggs and ostrich eggs, creatively decorated, for example scratched or painted as icons, along with traditional customary eggs, natural eggs and pieces from around the world.

The museum traditionally opens only during the Easter season. Each season includes a craft market on the first floor, where artisans work on site and sell their creations; in addition, there are changing special exhibitions and events in the town.
