About the museum

The Holzschnitt-Museum houses the Klaus Herzer Art Foundation and shows the life's work of the woodcut artist Klaus Herzer. The collection comprises about 1,500 woodblock and metal prints, along with printing blocks, wooden sculptures, monotypes, a large Grieshaber printing press, a proofing press and other tools.

The museum is housed in the old town hall of Öschingen, which was built in 1700. Since a woodcut cycle created by the artist in 1993, the building has also been called the Schultheißenhaus. The museum's festive opening took place on 24 November 2001.

The rooms on the upper floor are laid out as an educational trail through relief printing: pictorial examples, exhibits and texts explain various printing processes using the woodcut as an example. The house sees itself as a living museum and, besides guided tours, offers discussion and lecture evenings, picture viewings with musical or literary references, and occasional hands-on printing events.
