Wilhelm-Hauff-Museum

Literature museum in Lichtenstein-Honau on Wilhelm Hauff, his fairy tales, and the novel "Lichtenstein" – below Schloss Lichtenstein.

Opening hoursAdmission from €2

About the museum

The small museum stands in the district of Honau, directly below the cliff on which Schloss Lichtenstein sits. The proximity is no coincidence: Wilhelm Hauff's novel "Lichtenstein," published in 1826, inspired Count Wilhelm of Württemberg to have the castle rebuilt in the Romantic style from 1840 to 1842.

The museum is housed in a former bull barn (Farrenstall), which was built as a result of a Württemberg animal breeding law of 1882 and lost its function when bull keeping ended. The municipality of Lichtenstein renovated the building and opened it as a museum in 1982, on the poet's 180th birthday.

In 2013 the exhibition was fundamentally redesigned with the support of the German Literature Archive in Marbach. It presents Hauff's novel and his fairy tales such as "Zwerg Nase" (Dwarf Nose), "Kalif Storch" (Caliph Stork), "Der kleine Muck" (Little Muck), and "Das kalte Herz" (The Cold Heart) and links them with the history of the place. A reading corner, audiobooks, films, and an audio guide round out the offering.
