Maritime Erlebniswelt Papenburg

Interactive exhibition in a former harbor warehouse of the Meyer Werft shipyard on the history of Papenburg, from the moor colony to shipbuilding.

Opening hoursAdmission €8 Wheelchair accessible

About the museum

The exhibition is located in a former harbor warehouse on the grounds of the old Meyer Werft in the town center of Papenburg. The shipyard moved to the outer harbor on the Ems in the 1980s, and the old site later became the Forum Alte Werft cultural center. Until October 2020 the house operated as an interactive visitor information center under the name Papenburger Zeitspeicher.

After about twelve months of conversion and investments of around €3.6 million, financed with funds from the EU, the state of Lower Saxony, the Emsland district and the town of Papenburg, the house reopened on May 14, 2022 as the Maritime Erlebniswelt. It is operated by Papenburg Marketing GmbH.

Over three floors and around 1,000 square meters, the exhibition tells how the first settlers lived in the moor and how the oldest and longest Fehn colony in Germany came into being. Shipbuilding plays the central role, from simple wooden boats to steel ships. Visitors can experience interactively how ships were built, launch their own ship or steer it into the harbor, and follow discovery routes to replicas of the wooden boats in the town's canals.
