About the museum

The Papenhof, west of the Marienkirche in Barth, was built around 1490 as a two-story gable house for the Kaland brotherhood, a community of priests. A beam in the southwest gable can be dated to 1482. After a conversion in 1521, the Barth church synods met in the tall hall (Diele), which is why the building was also called the Synodalhaus (synod house).

In 1585, district captain (Amtshauptmann) Joachim Steding received the house from Duke Bogislaw XIII and had it expanded in Renaissance style to double its floor area; from this period come the half-timbered gables, the gallery hall and the fireplaces. After the Northern Wars, the half-timbering gave way to a hipped roof, and in the 1830s the present staircase and double-leaf doors were added. Until 1989, the building was divided into apartments.

After the building was vacated, its fabric deteriorated, and in 2014 the town of Barth decided to restore it and convert it into a museum. Several years of building research documented historic room finishes and fragments of a Renaissance window. The new museum opened in September 2025 and, together with the neighboring Reuterschule and the Barth Culture Mile (Kulturmeile), is intended to become a place for exhibitions and education.
