On the 100th anniversary of the death of Louis Douzette, honorary citizen of Barth and painter: the exhibition shows his roots in Romanticism and his motif of light, from the circle around Caspar David Friedrich to Impressionism. The exhibition has been extended.
About the museum
The house at Lange Straße 16 is an 18th-century merchant's house that served as the town hall from 1870 to 1946. Already in the 1950s a town museum was temporarily housed here. The collection goes back to the teacher Gustav Ruffert, who had built it up since World War I; it was moved several times, and many pieces were damaged in the process. In 1961 the dissolution of the museum was even under discussion.
In December 1997 the museum reopened in thoroughly renovated rooms. Since then it has been rebuilding a town history collection, with documents dating back to the town's founding, objects on fishing and seafaring, and works by important personalities from Barth. The museum became known beyond the region through its regular special exhibitions related to the town and its surroundings.
Across three floors there is also a separate section on the Vineta myth, where visitors can board the "U 98" and explore the source material on the Vineta theory and its reception in literature, music and art. A small permanent exhibition is dedicated to the Barth painter Louis Douzette; in the former cellar, a hand-painted "diving bell" recalls the underwater world.
