About the museum

The museum was built because of the Pergamon Altar, whose relief panels engineer Carl Humann excavated in Pergamon in Asia Minor from 1878 onward and had brought to Berlin. A first museum building from 1901 soon proved unsuitable due to the difficult ground conditions and was taken down again. Starting in 1910, the present three-wing building went up to plans by Alfred Messel, continued after his death by Ludwig Hoffmann; it opened in 1930 for the centenary of the Berlin museums.

From the outset, the museum was designed to let visitors experience entire structures at their original size: the altar, the Market Gate of Miletus, the Ishtar Gate with the Processional Way of Babylon, and the facade of the Mshatta desert palace. It houses three collections – the Antikensammlung (Collection of Classical Antiquities), the Vorderasiatisches Museum (Museum of the Ancient Near East), and the Museum für Islamische Kunst (Museum of Islamic Art). After World War II, many objects, including the altar, were taken to the Soviet Union; they returned to Berlin in 1958.

Since 2013 the building has been undergoing a thorough renovation in two construction phases as part of the Museumsinsel master plan. The altar hall has been inaccessible since 2014, and the entire museum closed on October 23, 2023. On June 4, 2027, the north wing and central section are scheduled to reopen with the Pergamon Altar, the Hall of Hellenistic Architecture, and a completely redesigned presentation of the Museum für Islamische Kunst; the Vorderasiatisches Museum will then show a selection in the north wing. The south wing with the Ishtar Gate is expected to follow in 2037. The museum is also gaining a fourth wing to create a continuous circuit and will be linked to the neighboring museums by the underground Archäologische Promenade.
