About the museum
The mushroom museum goes back to the collection of the volunteer mushroom expert Reiner Helwig from Dresden. For many years he built lifelike mushroom models, took photographs, gave advice and organized mushroom exhibitions. From September 2009 he made his collection available to the association Kulturzentrum Erbgericht e.V. in Reinhardtsgrimma, which now runs a mushroom museum; Helwig continues to provide mushroom education there on a voluntary basis.
The museum is housed in the former inn "Zum Erbgericht", a listed building that the association bought in 2005 and made usable again after a long period of vacancy. Besides the mushroom museum, the building also houses the local heritage association, a café, a columned hall and a large festival hall.
The German Mushroom Study Cabinet (Deutsches Pilzkunde-Kabinett) shows about 700 mushroom species, around 3,500 photo documentations, several hundred dried specimens (exsiccatae) of preserved fresh mushrooms, and over three thousand models made from nature, arranged systematically by class, order, family, genus and species. Depending on the season, freshly collected mushrooms are added. The exhibition is aimed at mushroom experts, interested laypeople and schools. Its goal is to educate visitors about the careful handling of mushrooms and to provide the basics for correct collecting and safe eating.
