About the museum

The museum was founded in 1975 and is located in a tannery built around 1750, which is a listed monument. The ensemble includes the baroque residence of the tanning family Ulbrich, the faithfully reconstructed three-story tannery workshop and a connecting building; the depot is housed in the gatehouse of the former town mill.

After dry rot (Echter Hausschwamm) was discovered, the building underwent comprehensive renovation from October 2018 to March 2022, was made barrier-free and was newly conceived in terms of content. In November 2023 it received the main prize of the Saxon Museum Award for this work.

The permanent exhibition is divided into three areas. The inactive tannery workshop shows the craft of leather production and is considered a unique demonstration installation in Europe. The town history spans from the first mention of Dippoldiswalde in 1218, through its mining settlement, crafts and light industry, to the more recent past. The gallery presents visual art from the Osterzgebirge; its holdings comprise more than 6,000 works by over 250 artists, including works by Curt Querner and Erich Fraaß.
