About the museum
The museum's idea goes back to the Emmerich school principal Ernst Müller, who in 1968 had display boards with posters of zoos, trade fairs and cities set up in the break room for the children of the Martini primary school. He soon discovered the artistic appeal of the medium; in 1972, the first art exhibition followed, with works by Holger Matthies.
In 1994, the friends' association was founded, which runs the house on a self-financing basis; in 1999, the Stiftung Plakatmuseum am Niederrhein (foundation) was added, with the collection of the couple Ursula and Ernst Müller. The city of Emmerich bears only the building's ongoing costs. In 2003, the new house opened in the former cross wing of the Lohmann chocolate factory, popularly known as the "Schokoriegel."
The collection comprises almost 60,000 posters. The concept is interdisciplinary: alongside poster art, the PAN shows painting, sculpture, installation, video and performance, and sees itself as a forum for emerging artists and for collaborations with universities.
