About the museum
The treasury is located in a chapel above the north side choir of St. Martini church in Emmerich am Rhein. The former collegiate church was built from around 1040, was damaged repeatedly by the Rhine, and in 1944, during World War II, was destroyed down to its outer walls. It was rebuilt in simplified form by 1964, and a comprehensive restoration followed between 1976 and 1989.
The treasury brings together the church treasures of the former St. Martini collegiate foundation, supplemented by pieces from the parish church of St. Vitus in nearby Hochelten. On display are valuable reliquaries, most of them made between 1300 and 1450, finely worked crystal flasks from around 1000, and the Ark of St. Willibrord, a bursa reliquary whose body probably dates from around 1040.
In addition there are liturgical vessels from various centuries, such as chalices, ciboria and monstrances. The treasury is not a regularly open museum; it is shown as part of guided tours or by arrangement.
