About the museum
The Gildekaot came into being in 1991, when the Sint Oswaldus Guild of Zeddam had the little house built at its own expense. It was modelled on the many simple workers' cottages that once stood in the area and that have now almost all been demolished, converted or fallen into disrepair. It was built using traditional construction methods and the materials used at the time; the house opened to visitors in 1993.
At that time, most people in the area lived as day labourers. They usually lived near a single farm, kept a few pigs or goats and worked a vegetable garden to feed their often large families. The museum shows this modest everyday life of the years 1875 to 1900: with a hearth with stove, furniture of the period, a living kitchen, a sleeping alcove with a bedstead and a stable. There is also a room for small exhibitions with photos and objects.
Volunteers of the Guild look after the house and its surroundings and open the museum to visitors. Nearby are the Torenmolen, the Rosmolen and the St. Oswalduskerk; opposite lies the Guild's sheep meadow, where every December an illuminated Christmas tree frame more than 30 metres high is erected.
