Plastik-Park Leuna
Freely accessible sculpture park in Leuna with 31 bronze sculptures by East German sculptors (1947–1967), a branch of the Kunstmuseum Moritzburg Halle.
About the museum
The park above the Saale floodplain in the garden city of Leuna was laid out around 1920 and redesigned after the Second World War under the landscape architect Franz Mengel. In the early 1960s the idea arose to show contemporary sculpture in the open air and thereby bring art to the employees of the nearby chemical combine. The driving force was Heinz Schönemann, then director of the museum in Halle, who found a partner in the management of the Leuna works.
In July 1962 a summer exhibition of bronze sculptures was opened in the park, and from 1963 the works remained permanently installed. The museum acquired the figures partly directly from the artists or commissioned them; they were placed in the green spaces, coordinated thematically with one another and with the planting.
The 31 works from the years 1947 to 1967 range from memorials to the victims of National Socialism through depictions of workers and farmers to freer figurative works in which influences of international modernism can be felt – which at the time triggered a public debate about artistic freedom. Between 2008 and 2012 the park and sculptures were renovated, adding new paths, trees and shrubs, and a playground. Today the park is considered a monument and testimony to the art and contemporary history of the GDR; it is looked after as a branch by the Kunstmuseum Moritzburg Halle (Saale).
