About the museum
The Willi Sitte Gallery opened in Merseburg on February 28, 2006. It moved into the restored former Domkurie Nova at Domstraße 15, which was renovated as part of the state initiative Urban 21 and belongs to the cathedral and castle ensemble of the town. The gallery is run by the Förderkreis Willi-Sitte-Galerie e. V., a friends' association.
The focus is on drawings, prints, and paintings by Willi Sitte, who was born in 1921, from about 60 years of his work, as well as works by other artists from his family's collection. The gallery sees itself as a place for realistic art, for engaging with historical events, and for cultural education. According to the Förderkreis, more than 80 exhibitions have been shown since the opening, seen by about 90,000 visitors. An elevator serves all floors; the terrace and open-air theater serve as additional spaces for events.
