About the museum

The Borlach Tower is the landmark of Bad Dürrenberg and also appears in the town's coat of arms. It was built over a brine shaft with which, in the 18th century under the direction of the Electoral Saxon mining councilor Johann Gottfried Borlach, brine was extracted for the saltworks. The timber-lined shaft reaches more than 200 meters deep.

At the beginning of the 19th century, the Witzleben Tower was built as a second hoisting tower, in which a replica of a steam engine can now be seen. Together with the long graduation works, both structures form the ensemble that shapes the salt history of the town.

The museum in the Borlach Tower honors Borlach's work and tells how table salt was boiled from the Dürrenberg brine and how the place developed into a spa town. Models of the old water-lifting machinery and tools of the salt boilers such as salt rakes, boiling baskets, and shovels illustrate the hard work at the saltworks.
