About the museum
The Essen Police History Collection presents more than a hundred years of police history, built on privately run collecting work. It is looked after by the Essen liaison office of the International Police Association (IPA) and is housed in the police building on Theodor-Althoff-Straße, the former administrative headquarters of a department store group.
Around 5,000 objects are on display, including uniforms, service IDs, batons, command and operational equipment, as well as a collection of police caps from 180 countries. Replica police stations from the Weimar era and the 1970s, and a cell from a police detention facility, convey the everyday duty of earlier periods.
Visitors can have their photo taken on a chair of the identification unit. Because the collection lies in a security area of the police building, visits are only possible after registration, with pickup at the main entrance.
