Postmuseum Rheinhessen
Small association museum on the postal history of Rheinhessen in the former post office branch of the Erbes-Büdesheim town hall, open by arrangement.
About the museum
The Postmuseum Rheinhessen goes back to the Verein für Postgeschichte in Rheinhessen (association for postal history). With the restructuring of the postal service, many discarded items – mailboxes, stamp vending machines, signs – were sorted out. The association's members collected such pieces to save them from destruction and show them to the public.
In June 2002 the museum opened in the rooms of the former post office branch in the town hall of Erbes-Büdesheim. The place suits the theme: where letters were once accepted and parcels handed out, a completely preserved post office interior from the neighboring village of Bechenheim now tells of everyday work in a rural post office before the computer age.
The focus of the collection is on letter delivery in rural areas. On display are postmarks, mailboxes, and postal signs from more than 150 years, as well as uniform caps, photographs, and documents, and telephones from the 1950s to the 1970s, recalling the time when postal and telecommunications services were still organized under one roof.
The museum is run by volunteers. It opens for groups by arrangement and, during events in the village, for all interested visitors; admission is free.
