Museum im Glockenturm Bechtolsheim
Local history museum in the historic bell tower at the Simultankirche – the local history of Bechtolsheim on three floors.
About the museum
The bell tower next to the Simultankirche (shared church) in Bechtolsheim belongs not to the church but to the civil municipality. Its predecessor burned out in the summer of 1904 after a lightning strike; the present tower was inaugurated in 1907. It became known nationwide through the Bechtolsheim bell dispute over the ringing of bells for the deceased of all denominations, which was only decided before the Federal Administrative Court.
Since 2007 the Heimatverein Bechtolsheim (local history association) has looked after the tower. It was renovated with state funding, and in September 2012 the association opened the Museum im Glockenturm there, which uses the first floor and two upper floors.
The exhibition traces the development of the medieval linear village, which was jointly ruled by several Ganerben (co-owners). Cadastral plans, historic photographs, and objects make houses and families tangible; complete lists of houses and citizens from 1906 and 1938 serve as a guide through the exhibition and the village. Also on display are a Neolithic stone axe, building elements from the ruins of the medieval Peterskirche, and the historic tower clock mechanism. The presentation is continually changed.
