About the museum

The Ober-Flörsheim local history museum opened in 1980 in a former schoolroom in the village community hall. The building is an imposing structure from the mid-18th century, once the commandery of the Teutonic Order. The Order maintained a branch in Ober-Flörsheim from 1237 to 1797, until the French occupation of the left bank of the Rhine led to the seizure of its property. The manor house served as a school from 1825 until 1968.

The collection grew steadily under the first museum director, so soon a second room was needed; later a technology room with collections of corkscrews, clocks and mobile phones was added. Today the museum has well over 1,200 exhibits. The village municipality is the sponsoring body; since 2001, the local heritage and culture society has handled management, administration and guided tours.

In content, the museum connects village history with the history of the Teutonic Order, which is also covered by an exhibition developed with children that includes a model of the commandery. In addition there are tools from farming, wine-growing, household use and crafts, Rhenish Hessian pottery, early historical finds, including documentation on the Flomborn crouched burials, and furniture from the old village school.
