About the museum
The Preetz clog-making business of the Hamann family has existed since 1846 and is run by the fifth generation; Lorenz Hamann is considered one of the last clog makers in northern Germany. The "Preetzer Holzschuhe" (Preetz clogs) carried the name of the shoemaking town far beyond the region. The clog makers' guild had already dissolved in 1966; the family business celebrated its 150th anniversary in 1996.
On May 18, 2008, the Preetzer Holzschuhmuseum (Preetz clog museum) opened in the renovated workshop. It shows how clogs are made step by step and tells the story of the craft in Preetz. The workshop remains a place of work: visitors see the craft in its own setting, and school classes from the region visit the house as part of guided tours.
The family has since handed sales at markets and trade fairs, as well as online sales, over to a former helper from the workshop.
