About the museum
The Rehmuseum shows the wildlife-biology collection of Duke Albrecht of Bavaria (1905–1996), which he assembled over decades in his hunting grounds, above all in the Weichselboden district in Styria. From 1984 to 2005 the collection was housed at the Grünau hunting lodge.
On the occasion of the duke's 100th birthday, the collection was presented in full in 2005 in a new concept in the former stables of Berchtesgaden Palace. Since then it has been publicly accessible and is also available for scientific studies.
The exhibition explains the results of the duke's long-term research: according to his findings, game animals develop poorly when living conditions are inadequate, and with sufficient nutrition, browsing damage does not occur. For this work he received an honorary doctorate from the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich. A media room shows photos of Duchess Jenke from the hunting ground and a biographical film about the duke.
