Museum Schloss Adelsheim
Local history museum in the Renaissance Schloss Adelsheim in Berchtesgaden: chip-wood boxes, wooden toys, bone carvings, and nativity scenes.
About the museum
Schloss Adelsheim was built in 1614 as a summer and pleasure house for the cathedral provost Degenhart Neuchinger of the Prince-Provostry of Berchtesgaden. After several changes of ownership, the building passed to the Bavarian state at the end of the 18th century and at times served the salt works administration; the last prince-provost, Joseph Konrad von Schroffenberg, spent his last months here in 1803.
The local history museum itself dates back to 1897 and was initially housed in the Berchtesgaden carving school. After the district acquired the endangered palace in 1963, the collection moved to the more spacious rooms in 1968. Since the territorial reform of 1972, the district of Berchtesgadener Land has been the owner and operator. After a roof renovation from 2020 to 2022, the house reopened in June 2022.
On roughly 600 square meters in 13 rooms, the museum is devoted to traditional Berchtesgaden handicrafts: painted chip-wood boxes, colorful wooden toys, flutes, bone and ivory carvings, as well as religious figures and nativity scenes. Also on display are traditional costumes, Baroque wooden sculptures, marionettes, and parts of the Rudolf Kriss folklore collection.
