Römergrab Köln-Weiden

Opening hoursAdmission from €5

About the museum

The burial chamber belonged to a Roman estate on the Via Belgica, the long-distance road from Cologne to Gaul that lives on today as Aachener Straße. From the 2nd century onward, a wealthy family buried its dead here over several generations. The underground, barrel-vaulted chamber, built of tuff blocks, is designed like a dining room, with stone couches and wicker-style armchairs as well as niches for urns and grave goods.

In 1843 a carter came across the entrance by chance during construction work. Shortly afterward the Prussian state acquired the land; cathedral architect Ernst Friedrich Zwirner had the chamber secured, a chapel-like protective building erected over it along with a caretaker's house, and opened the tomb to the public in 1848 – an early example of state-run heritage conservation. Many small finds were sent to Berlin at the time. After Weiden was incorporated into Cologne in 1975, the Römisch-Germanisches Museum took over its care and had the site restored.

After a long period without regular opening hours, the Förderverein Römergrab Weiden (friends' association) was founded in 2017 and has operated the ensemble on behalf of the state ever since. Since July 2019 it has been a learning and discovery center: the burial chamber is presented without explanatory panels, while the caretaker's house provides information on the discovery, the Roman countryside, burial customs and beliefs about the afterlife, with listening stations, a tactile model and VR headsets. Since 2024 the "Römisch Grün" garden with plants from Roman times has also been part of the site.
