Römermuseum Bedaium
Museum in Seebruck on Lake Chiemsee on the Celtic-Roman past with over 500 finds from ancient Bedaium and an archaeological circular trail.
About the museum
Seebruck lies where the Alz leaves Lake Chiemsee. In Roman times, the settlement of Bedaium arose at this river crossing on the road from Iuvavum (Salzburg) to Augusta Vindelicum (Augsburg), named after the god Bedaius, to whom a stone temple was dedicated on the site of today's church; in late antiquity, a fort was added. When the church tower tilted during its reconstruction between 1837 and 1843 because it stood on a wall of this fort, the systematic exploration of the site began.
The finds were first shown in a collection in the schoolhouse, which the local heritage officer Carl Ostermayer expanded. In 1979, a larger museum opened in the Raiffeisenbank building, and in the same year the Heimat- und Geschichtsverein Bedaium (local history association) was founded, which set itself the goal of having its own museum building. This was inaugurated on October 15, 1988; the exhibition was set up by what is now the Archäologische Staatssammlung München (State Archaeological Collection of Munich), which still oversees the museum scientifically.
On the upper floor, more than 500 original finds in 18 display cases show settlement from the Stone and Bronze Ages through the Celtic-Roman village community to the Bavarii. On the ground floor, special exhibitions with reconstructions and hands-on stations change every year. In 2007, an archaeological circular trail with eleven stations was added, starting at the museum. Since 2022, the municipality of Seeon-Seebruck has operated the museum, which appeals especially to school classes with experiential tours in Roman gear.
