About the museum

The house at Büchel 14 has carried the house name "Rote Burg" since the Middle Ages and stands in the Krämerviertel, Aachen's oldest merchant quarter. The stone vaulted cellar dates almost unchanged from its construction around 1450; the first owners were members of the merchant and lay judge family von Segraide.

In the 17th century the timber-framed house burned down to the cellar. In 1671/72 the copper master and city councilor Folquin Fibus had a two-story stone and timber-framed house built on top of it, whose facade still defines the building today. Later the ground floor was converted into a shop, where general goods were sold until the early 20th century. After a thorough renovation in 1988/89 and a period as a restaurant with a piano and dance bar, the building was converted in 2018 into exhibition rooms for a museum showing prints and art from the 19th century to the modern era.

The ground floor is dedicated to the painter and graphic artist Emil Orlik (1870–1932), who was professor of graphic arts and book art in Berlin from 1906 until his death. In the vaulted cellar, changing exhibitions take place, along with concerts, jazz evenings and readings for up to 60 guests. A friends' association supports the upkeep of the rooms, museum operations and the events program.
