About the museum

In 1883 the Aachener Museumsverein (museum society) founded a municipal art museum, named after its first major benefactor, the industrialist and collector Barthold Suermondt. In 1901 the collection moved into the Villa Cassalette on Wilhelmstraße, an urban mansion with a historicist facade built in the 1880s to designs by Eduard Linse.

The building has been expanded several times, most recently in 1992–1994 with an extension by the architects Busmann + Haberer. Since 1977 it has also borne the name of the collector couple Peter and Irene Ludwig, who entrusted the museum with important works.

The collection ranges from medieval sculpture and stained glass to Dutch and Flemish painting of the 16th and 17th centuries and on to classical modernism and contemporary art. Artists represented include Lucas Cranach, Albrecht Dürer, Rembrandt, August Macke and Max Beckmann. A print room with around 10,000 drawings and prints and a large art library complement the holdings.

The museum is run by the City of Aachen; since 2022 it has been directed by Till-Holger Borchert, and it regularly presents special exhibitions related to its own collection.
