About the museum

The Rundlingsmuseum Wendland is located in Lübeln, one of the best-preserved Rundling villages in the Lüchow-Dannenberg district. Instead of a newly built museum village, the district bought a historic farmstead in 1972; in 1976 the Heimathaus, a three-post house from 1733, opened there as the core of the museum.

In the following decades the grounds were expanded with a bakehouse, flax kiln, carriage shed, and further buildings moved from the region, including the house of the peasant chronicler Johann Parum Schultze, a smithy, a drive-through barn from 1852, and a wheelwright's workshop. After a drop in visitors following the opening of the border in 1989, event days, exhibitions, and museum education revived the museum; in 2013 a fruit barn was added at the orchard meadow.

Today the museum shows how the round village form came about and how the rural population of the Wendland lived, spoke, and dressed. Permanent exhibitions are devoted to the Rundlings, the chronicle of Parum Schultze, the flax and linen trade, and the colorful Wendland costumes. In the pottery, smithy, bakehouse, and wheelwright's workshop, old crafts are demonstrated on event days.
