About the museum
Shortly after the First World War, choir singers in Germany began to gather documents about their movement. The collection went to the German Sängermuseum in Nuremberg, which was completely destroyed in 1945; a large part of the estimated 30,000 items, including autographs by Richard Wagner, was lost in the process.
It was not until 1989 that a Sängermuseum could be re-established in Feuchtwangen, initially as the museum of the Franconian Singers' Association. Through significant collections and estates from across the country, including around 3,000 of the long-lost autographs from Nuremberg, its scope grew beyond Franconia. Since 1999, the museum, archive and research library have been run by a foundation, now called Stiftung Deutsches Chorwesen, based in Feuchtwangen.
The museum is located in the old town of Feuchtwangen, the 'cloister town' (Kreuzgangstadt) and seat of the oldest surviving amateur choir in Franconia. The permanent exhibition covers the choral landscape with its roughly 60,000 choirs: banners, trophies, medals, festival badges, chronicles, minute books, instruments and sheet music from the era of the singing movement to the present, supplemented by sound samples, images and videos.
