About the museum
The Kinderzeche in Dinkelsbühl combines a school festival, first documented in 1629, with a festival play created in 1897 about the siege of the town during the Thirty Years' War. Since 1897 this custom has been celebrated every year as a major town festival and is recognized as intangible cultural heritage.
The Kinderzech-Zeughaus preserves the stock of the festival play. It is housed in an impressive half-timbered building, the former granary, where grain dues were once stored.
On three levels, costumes, weapons, cannons, wagons, armor and furniture used for the festival play are on display; according to tourism sources, the holdings include over 800 costumes. The house is run by the Verein des Historischen Festspiels (Historic Festival Play Association) and is open only on certain days of the season.
