About the museum

The museum goes back to the bequest of the Kirchberg judicial councillor Theodor Sandel, who donated his collections to the town. They include furniture, paintings, faience, pewter, weapons, coins, prehistoric finds, as well as crafts and furnishings from North Africa. The Sandelsches Museum opened at Kirchstraße 19 in 1930; since 1973 it has been housed in the former Latin school of 1748.

Later donations were added, including parts of the estate of the writer G. Harro Schaeff-Scheefen, objects from Cameroon collected by the colonial officer Kurt von Crailsheim, and estates of Kirchberg painters. In 2012 a Hohenlohe library of around 1,600 books and a flint collection followed.

After a thorough renovation in 2002/2003, the house reopened in 2004 with a new arrangement; it received the Baden-Württemberg state museum prize and in 2007 was honored as a model "Vorbildliches Heimatmuseum" (exemplary local history museum). The town is the sponsor, and the volunteer Museums- und Kulturverein supervises the museum.
