About the museum
Slate has been quarried in Raumland for more than 450 years. Slate was first documented in 1563, and the oldest surviving quarrying concession dates from 1717 and was granted by Count Casimir zu Sayn-Wittgenstein-Berleburg. At first the work was done in open-cast mining; only after 1850 did they go underground. From 1860 the roofing-slate industry experienced its heyday; around 450 miners worked in ten mines in and around Raumland.
In the "Delle" mine, roof and wall slate was extracted from 1860 to 1923. The last slate mine in the village closed in 1973, because roof tiles and synthetic slate were cheaper. In 1983 local heritage friends and former miners set up a show mine in the "Delle" mine.
Today volunteer mine guides of the local heritage association lead visitors through the gallery. They explain the geological formation of the slate and the extraction on site, and demonstrate its further processing into roof and wall slate, all by hand. Other offerings around the mine include a slate trail and a mine trail through Raumland.
