About the museum

The Ortsheimatverein Erndtebrück was founded at the end of November 1983 as part of the older Wittgensteiner Heimatverein, which has cared for the history and folklore of the region since 1913. In February 1984 the association agreed with the municipality that it could use large parts of the old town hall as a “Heimatstube”.

Over the years this Heimatstube has grown into the local history museum, which today shows the working world and domestic culture of the past hundred years in more than 30 rooms covering around 600 square metres. It is run on a voluntary basis by the association; it is open only on selected Sundays and for guided tours by arrangement. After the long Corona closure it reopened for the first time on 29 May 2022.

Erndtebrück was long known as a village of railwaymen, and railway history is correspondingly well represented, among other things with a model railway of the station around 1910. In addition, an air-raid shelter with a bombing simulation recalls the attacks of 1944/45, and the cells from the imperial era recall local history. Craftsmen’s workshops, a classroom, a 19th-century kitchen and dolls, teddy bears and toys round off the collection.
