About the museum

Friedrich Schiller lived in Dresden from 1785 to 1787 as the guest of his friend and patron Christian Gottfried Körner. The lawyer and art patron had helped the then penniless poet out of a predicament and offered him peace and quiet to work in his town house and on his vineyard in Loschwitz. It was here that Schiller completed "Don Karlos", worked on "Der Geisterseher" (The Ghost-Seer), and wrote the ode "An die Freude" (Ode to Joy).

The small pavilion-like garden house halfway up the Elbe slopes, about 500 meters north of the Blaues Wunder bridge, was part of the Körner vineyard. Whether Schiller actually used it himself is not documented – nevertheless, since the 19th century it has been the central site of Dresden's veneration of Schiller: a memorial plaque was mounted on the house in 1855, it was dedicated as a memorial site in 1863, and since 1913 a relief on the retaining wall opposite has commemorated the poet and the Körner family.

For the 200th anniversary of Schiller's death in 2005, the dilapidated little house was secured and made accessible again. Today it belongs to the Stadtmuseum Dresden within the Museen der Stadt Dresden; it is run by volunteers and the association Schiller & Körner in Dresden, founded in 2016. The small exhibition shows manuscripts, letters, text excerpts and reproductions of images, as well as mementos that were once on display in the destroyed Körner Museum.
