The exhibition presents artistic works by 14 artists depicting work from the Gründerzeit (the German boom period of the late 19th century) to the present day, including Käthe Kollwitz and Rosa Loy, and asks how the world of work has changed.
About the museum
Gut Britz is first mentioned in the Landbuch (land register) of Emperor Charles IV. The designation “Schloss” (palace) became established in the early 19th century. Around 1700, Samuel von Chwalkowski replaced the medieval half-timbered building with a late Baroque manor house, and from 1705 Court Marshal Sigismund von Erlach had the park laid out.
The estate enjoyed a new heyday from 1824 under the estate owner Carl Jouanne, who rebuilt the estate farm together with a distillery. In 1865 the sugar manufacturer and banker Julius Wrede acquired the estate and in 1880 had the manor house remodeled in the Neo-Renaissance style by Carl Busse. In 1924 the City of Berlin bought the property. The manor house was at first privately inhabited, was used as a home for refugees and orphans after 1945, and then served as a children’s home of the Neukölln district until the 1980s.
After being placed under heritage protection in 1971, the manor house was restored from 1985 to 1988 and furnished with matching Gründerzeit furniture; it has been open to the public since 1989. The permanent exhibition “Wohnkultur der Gründerzeit” occupies five rooms on the southern ground floor. The Kulturstiftung Schloss Britz runs a year-round cultural program in the palace, park, and Kulturstall.
