About the museum

Unteraufseß Castle is first mentioned in records in the early 12th century and remains in the possession of the von Aufseß family to this day. The oldest building is the Meingoz stone house, probably built around 1136. Severe damage occurred during the Hussite assault and the Peasants' War; the rebuilding of the inner castle was completed in 1537. The Thirty Years' War burned the complex down again, and building work dragged on until 1677; the present complex dates from this period.

After a division of the estate, Unteraufseß passed in 1850/51 to Hans, Baron von und zu Aufseß (1801–1872). The history- and art-loving private scholar founded the Germanisches Nationalmuseum in Nuremberg in 1852. His study in the Meingoz stone house has survived to this day, and his portraits hang in the Ancestors' Hall.

On a guided tour, visitors see the Ancestors' Hall, the Ladies' Salon, the family chapel, and the Meingoz stone house. The castle is still the family's residence and is privately operated.
