Skeletons and finds from the family vaults beneath the Hauptkirche show how the upper class lived in early-modern Wolfenbüttel. Combined with archive sources and historical research.
For many centuries, the palace in Wolfenbüttel was the residence of the Dukes of Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel. At the beginning of its eventful building history stands the water castle of the lords of Wolfenbüttel, which was turned through conversions and extensions into a Baroque residence palace. In 1754, the dukes moved their residence to Braunschweig.
Afterward the palace had very different uses: rooms served as the home of Gotthold Ephraim Lessing and as a bookshop, French refugees from the Revolution found shelter there, a theater and the district court moved in, and finally a school was established. Today the building houses a Gymnasium (academic secondary school), the Bundesakademie für kulturelle Bildung (Federal Academy for Cultural Education), and the museum.
Since 2000, the permanent exhibition has shown the lavishly restored state rooms of the Welfs. Historic parquet floors and stucco ceilings, tapestries, Baroque furniture, paintings, sculptures, and silver and porcelain convey a vivid picture of princely living and dining culture. The Schloss Museum belongs to the Museum Wolfenbüttel of the city, which also includes the Bürger Museum.
