About the museum

The Braunschweig repair works began operating in 1927 and was one of the largest and most modern steam locomotive workshops in Germany; at the end, it was the Bundesbahn's last steam locomotive repair works, servicing large express locomotives among others. After it closed, most of the facilities were preserved. The two large halls went to commercial users, while the Verein Braunschweiger Verkehrsfreunde (VBV) took over the former western engine preparation shed with its transfer table and outdoor grounds in 1978.

The VBV had been founded back in 1949 and acquired its first rail vehicles of its own in 1969. Today the collection includes steam and diesel locomotives, railcars, and passenger, baggage and freight cars, mostly from branch lines and private railroads. Among the oldest pieces are Hanomag tank locomotives from 1898 and 1912; the steam locomotive "Braunschweig," built in 1925, is in working order.

In the largely original locomotive hall, the volunteers work on tracks with inspection pits, a drop table and a wheelset lathe from 1906. The site, covering some 27,500 square meters, also illustrates railroad operations with signal boxes from three technological generations, a World War II splinter-proof bunker, a driver's cab simulator and a 5-inch-gauge miniature railway. The "Asse-Bummler" museum train also departs from here.
