About the museum
The local history collection at the Heikenhof in Groß Gleidingen has existed since about 1965. It was founded by Heinrich Heike-Cramm (1914–2005) and is still privately run today, in a disused farmstead.
More than 1,000 objects are shown. The starting point is agricultural tools, to which are added rural household goods, linen, laundry, cloths, ribbons and bonnets, items relating to home slaughter, club banners and photographs. There are also stones and fossils, bones and teeth of Ice Age animals from the village's gravel pits, bird eggs, urn finds and prehistoric finds from the fields. A favorite piece is the "Freud- und Leid-Tuch" (joy-and-sorrow cloth), one half of which was meant for sad occasions and the other for happy ones.
