About the museum
The Heimatverein Jevenstedt (local heritage association) was founded on September 13, 1989 by seven residents of the village and has looked after the building and the collection ever since. In March 1991 it leased the old village forge on the Itzehoer Chaussee. The building belonged to a quarter-hide farm and is documented as a house-and-farm forge already in the 18th century. From 1946 the blacksmith Arnold Neben senior worked here in exchange for payment in kind; in 1956 he built a new forge on Meiereistraße, whose equipment his family later handed over to the association.
After an assessment by the monument conservation office of the Kreis Rendsburg-Eckernförde, restoration began in 1993 as part of village renewal. The Technisches Hilfswerk (THW, technical relief organization) removed the roof; the half-timbering, masonry and roof structure were renewed in the old style as far as possible, largely using reclaimed materials from the area. The topping-out ceremony followed in April 1994, and the forge was dedicated on October 8, 1995.
Today the museum shows a complete smithy workshop as well as agricultural and craft tools from Jevenstedt and the surrounding area. The association is currently archiving the collection.
