About the museum
The museum is housed in the former village school of Wartha (Sorbian: Stróža) in Upper Lusatia. The Sorbian composer Korla Awgust Kocor (1822–1904) taught here from 1842 to 1852 and shaped the history of the school and village; a memorial plaque on the house commemorates him.
In the museum, visitors and school classes experience a school day from about 175 years ago: writing with quill and ink or with a slate pencil on a slate board, the old German Sütterlin script, and much about Sorbian culture and customs. The house is run by the local heritage association "Radiška," whose traditions go back to the Wendish education association of Wartha founded in 1848. It is supported by the Foundation for the Sorbian People.
The house includes a school and herb garden, newly designed in 2023, with local vegetables and medicinal herbs, where kindergarten and primary school children in particular experience the course of a garden year. The association also organizes festivals such as Hexenbrennen (witch burning), Easter egg painting, a festival of lights and an open school door day on Whit Sunday.
