About the museum
The museum goes back to the collecting passion of joinery and glazing master Rüdiger Timme, who began gathering molding planes in 1965. In 1995 he set up a first historical workshop of 18 square meters, which visitors could also see. In 1998 the museum moved into the present four-sided farmstead on Ostendstraße, which still belongs to the Tischlerei Timme.
The exhibition now extends across ten rooms covering about 350 square meters. It shows a one-man joinery, larger workshops with wooden and cast-iron machines, and a wheelwright’s workshop that demonstrates how a wooden wagon wheel is made. Further workshops cover turnery, carpentry, cooperage, violin making and chair making. In 2012 the exhibition space was expanded by a historical barn across the street, where, among other things, veneer production, historical kitchen furniture, windows and doors are on view.
The focus is on the craft tradition of the Börde region; the collection also includes pieces from other countries, axes, windows, fittings and replicas of a Roman woodworking bench. Visits are by guided tour only.
