About the museum
The Schwanenritterkapelle lies in the high choir of St. Gumbertus in Ansbach, the oldest church in the town. The parish describes the choir as a remnant of the former late Romanesque main church; the present chapel dates from the 16th century. It adjoins the baroque church building that Margrave Carl Wilhelm Friedrich had erected in 1738 by Leopoldo Retti.
In the room you can see a late Gothic altar and the “Kelterbild” (winepress picture) from the school of Dürer. Beneath the chapel, the princely crypt has been located since 1976, with 25 sarcophagi of the margraves of Ansbach, including the coffin of Friederike Luise, sister of Frederick the Great.
Kaspar Hauser was confirmed in the chapel on May 20, 1833. Today the room belongs to the Protestant parish of St. Gumbertus/St. Johannis and is accessible only on guided tours.
