About the museum

The museum of the town of Neunburg vorm Wald was founded in 1910 and is one of the oldest and largest in the Upper Palatinate. Since 1980 it has been housed in the Old Castle (also called the Dürnitz), the former town palace and a residence of the Wittelsbach Palatine Counts from the 15th century.

On two floors of the castle and in its late Gothic watchtower, 18 rooms and a lapidarium extend across about 1,000 square meters of exhibition space. They lead from the beginnings of the town to the postwar period, through the history of the town and the Schwarzach valley.

Main themes include town history, a large collection of historical militaria, hunting and shooting societies, crafts and ironwork, death customs, religious art with reverse-glass paintings, paintings and sculptures, and rural and urban living. Further rooms are devoted to prehistory and early history, ceramics and glass, minerals, the view from the tower, and the stone lapidarium.
