About the museum
The building at Austraße 9 was constructed around 1870 and used over the course of its history, among other things, as a primary school, a tax office and accommodation for asylum seekers. After a restoration in keeping with monument protection, the Kunst- und Kulturzentrum Monschau opened in 2002, initially as an artists' studio house meant to bring artists and the public into conversation.
From 2011 onward, photography moved increasingly into the foreground. The studios were discontinued; instead, the house now presents four to five photography exhibitions a year, including work by internationally renowned photographers. Since 2020 the institution has been called the Fotografie-Forum der StädteRegion Aachen and sees itself as a museum site for photography in the region.
In parallel, its own collection has grown through donations, bequests and targeted purchases to more than 500 photographs, which are currently being digitized. The house spreads its cabinet-like exhibition rooms over three floors, and a learning studio offers workshops for children, young people and school classes. The house is run by the StädteRegion Aachen and supported by the KuK e. V. friends' association.
