About the museum

The Peetshof is a typical half-timbered farm of the Central Heath region; the buildings date mainly from around 1870, and the main house was built in 1874. It is rare for such a complete farmstead to still stand on its original site. The representative front door faces the street deliberately, and the path to it leads around a roundabout modeled on the driveway of a manor house.

In 1987 the municipality of Wietzendorf bought the farmstead for museum, cultural and local heritage purposes; the main house and barn were renovated in two construction phases between 1989 and 1992. The Heimatverein Peetshof Wietzendorf (local heritage association) was founded in February 1988; it leases and runs the farm. Volunteers built or renewed the pigsty, granary, cottage garden, bake house and fencing; in 2002, a reconstructed draw well and a sheep shed from Halmern were added.

Today the farm presents a rural museum on local and regional history, with exhibits from around 1900, as well as areas on agriculture, peat and beekeeping. The rooms of the main house include a "good room" (parlor), a bedroom and a classroom. The Peetshof is also a venue for celebrations, events and civil marriage ceremonies.
