About the museum
The Sparkassenmuseum tells the history of the Leipzig Sparkasse. In 1826 it opened its rooms to the public in the Neue Waage, after influential citizens of the city had encouraged the founding of an institution for secure, interest-bearing investment of money.
The permanent exhibition follows the story in five chapters, from the founders' first initiative to today's modern financial services provider. Its background is the social, economic and political developments of the 19th and 20th centuries.
On display are, among other things, the Sparkasse's first general ledger (1826–1838), one of the early armored safes from the mid-19th century, savings books and currencies from various eras, office machines, and historical savings advertising. The museum is located in the Galerie in der Schillerstraße, in the house of the Kunsthalle of the Sparkasse Leipzig.
