About the museum
The Sportmuseum Berlin goes back to preliminary work in East Berlin, where a central sports museum of the GDR was to be established. In 1995 it became part of the Stiftung Stadtmuseum Berlin, and since 1997 it has been based in the Olympiapark in Westend. The Wassersportmuseum (water sports museum) in Grünau also belongs to it.
The collection is considered the largest and most diverse sports collection in Germany. It comprises more than 100,000 objects, around 1.5 million photographs and a library of about 37,000 volumes on sports history spanning three centuries, including the official journals of the sports associations in East and West from 1945/46 to 1989.
To present itself in a contemporary way, the museum is currently being fundamentally redesigned. The north wing of the listed Maifeld grandstand in the Olympiapark is being converted into an exhibition building, and the new permanent exhibition is due to open in the fourth quarter of 2026. Until then, the house offers workshops, guided tours and events in the Olympiapark at irregular intervals; the library, photo archive and collection can be used by arrangement.
