About the museum

The mining district around the Ullersberg between Wolkenburg and Niederwinkel is one of the oldest ore-mining areas in Saxony. Its heydays lay between 1280 and 1350 and again between 1512 and 1590; silver, copper and lead ores were mined. At least 26 mines are known by name, but no plans have survived.

The St. Anna-Fundgrube dates back to before 1350, was reopened in the 16th century and served as an air-raid shelter in 1943. Since 1980 the Arbeitsgemeinschaft Altbergbau & Geologie Westsachsen e. V. has researched the history of the district and made parts of the workings accessible; since 2000 part of the Fundgrube has been approved as a show mine. By arrangement, the Segen Gottes Erbstolln near Niederwinkel can also be visited; it shows 18th-century mining technology and the transition from the Schiefergebirge to granulite.

The association is based in the former Bergamtshaus in the district of Herrnsdorf, first mentioned in 1613 and restored between 2006 and 2015. On the upper floor a small exhibition presents the geology and mining history of the district.
