Christmas special exhibition at the museum in Burgstädt.

About the museum

A first local heritage museum opened in Burgstädt in 1920 in the town hall, after an association of local history friends had encouraged the collecting of the town’s history. Due to waning interest, it closed during World War II. On October 3, 1990, history-minded residents founded the Museumsverein (museum association), which resumed museum operations that same year with a Christmas exhibition in the town hall.

To anchor the museum permanently in the historic townscape, the association converted the former cantorate. In this house on the market square, the town’s first school once had its place, where the cantor himself taught. Since September 2001, the City Museum has shown Burgstädt’s development here across three floors.

On the ground floor the focus is technology and the economy, above all the town’s former role as a Saxon textile metropolis and the production of fabric gloves; another room covers school history. The second floor presents urban development, electrification, water supply, transport links and notable personalities, plus a home-workers’ room from the 1920s and 1930s and a window into the Seiger clock tower. The attic is reserved for changing exhibitions. The museum also displays a model of the former wooden Taurastein Tower.
